School students can now take advantage of a new walking trail that's been built between the Bibbulmun Track and Wellington Dam near Collie.

The new hiking trail has been built specifically for schools and youth groups to provide an alternative Outdoor Education experience.

Known as 'The Wellington Spur Trail', it was built with the help of Lotterywest and offers a range of other recreational activities including mountain biking and canoeing.

The trail and campsites were developed particularly with schools and groups in mind.

The Department of Parks and Wildlife together with The Bibbulmun Track Foundation are encouraging them to include it in their camps or for stand-alone excursions.

As with the Bibbulmun Track, the facility is free to use and provides a few options to suit various age groups.

Each campsite facility has been designed to meet the needs of outdoor recreation groups of up to 30 .

Both also feature a large open shelter for cooking, a large rain water tank, picnic tables, toilets and a greater number of tent sites.

Additional information including contact details and a range of expedition planning resources are located on the Bibbulmun Track Foundation website.
