Melbourne Students Sent Home As Firefighters Battle Blaze

Fire crews have managed to control a house fire in Sydenham that has blanketed the area in a thick haze of smoke.

The Pecks Road fire, which was spotted by a postman, is across the road from Catholic Refional College Sydnenham.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade has urged people to avoid the area.

An MFB spokeswoman said the fire broke out at a single storey brick house between Sacras Court and Admiralty Lane. She was unable to confirm whether anyone was inside the house.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said paramedics were on site. “They’re on standby, no on has been treated."

Catholic Regional College Sydenham principal Brendan Watson said the school was unaffected but students had been asked to remain indoors as a precaution.

“We just told the students to wait until the firefighters have everything under control.”
