Nine Dead After Bali Bridge Collapses
A bridge connecting two popular islands in Bali has collapsed, leaving nine people dead and at least thirty injured.
A suspension bridge linking Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan collapsed on Sunday evening, an official from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said.
The “Yellow Bridge” can only be crossed by pedestrians and motorbikes, and was busy on Sunday evening due to a Hindu ceremony at a nearby temple. Officials suspect that the bridge collapsed because it was overcrowded.
“Before the bridge collapsed it was already shaking,” National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. “Some motorcyclists and people fell into the sea, and people in the area immediately tried to save them.”
The sea beneath the bridge was less than two metres deep, but police officer Arendra Wahyudi said that many of the victims were crushed by debris.
All of the victims were locals who lived on the two islands.
